UK GOVERNMENT RAISES CONCERNS ON CYBER SECURITY

The UK government is raising its cyber security standards in the country after its five year plan failed to execute good results.
Cyber Security is the protection of computers, networks, programs and data from unintended and unauthorized access, manipulation and destruction. It is also referred to as information security.
The UK government has been doing a lot of work and can point to its achievements in understanding and mitigating the cyber security threat and also addressing the skills gap in the information technology industry.
Despite the government’s efforts, The UK governments 2015 information security breaches survey reported more than 90% of UK organisations had security information breaches. Speaking at the RSA Conference 2016, in San Francisco, Director of Cyber Security at Communications-Electronics Security Group (CESG) Alex Dewdney said “bottom line is that the past five-year plan has not worked.” According to Dewdney, there would have been more security breaches if it were not for the government’s investment and actions.
However if the UK government keeps doing the same thing, it will not generate any good results. Investment and government action alone is not enough to solve the issue. The UK government should be more innovative and active in taking on the ever growing challenges in the industry. For instance outsourcing its security systems development and finding ways to replace legacy systems rather than maintaining them.
There is a much needed urgency to improve government security in the UK as the government focuses on putting online services to its citizens.
